There is a rule of survival- never spend more energy in getting something of less energy value. So a caveman would not spend 600 calories running after a 200 calorie rabbit. He would just set a trap. That way he spends 25 calories setting up a trap and gets 200 cals in return. Same when a modern man takes his SUV a 100 miles and catches a 150 calorie fish. Now thats a waste- The gas energy is not worth it. So humans are burdening the system by taking more energy out of the earth than they are returning to it.
I cant eliminate this deficit - but I do narrow it down. I always have had a south facing apartment on the second floor. That way you get most sunlight in your sun room and the guys above and below use their AC/Heater and your electric bill is max 50 -60 dollars in the hottest/coldest season.
I dont have money to buy a prius- so whenever I can - I get my friends to car pool with me to work.
We never have more than 2 lights on in the house. I do drive to the campsite 35 miles away- but once I reach there I stay for atleast 3 days and use minimal energy. I go shopping once in 10-14 days to one place- walmart or the mall. We make sure we get enough supplies and make extensive lists. Like a friend said- you can't drive to walmart for a snicker and chips.
THE ONLY THING I HAVE NOT DONE- minimize shower time to less than 5 minutes. I never use the tub, but I like a long shower. Thats the next thing to change on the list. (Or I could just buy a bucket and a mug)
