I just read a newspaper article mocking the no-impact man. "I drove 90 miles in my SUV dumpster diving but could not find a present for my son." Ok- no,no,NO!!! Dumpster diving is a game of opportunity and you play it like this- For everyday of the week that you go to jog/walk , take a different route. When you come across a dumpster just give it a glance. Someday you'll see a bike tyre sticking out, one day a TV or a microwave sitting just around it, a bed, mattress, table, entertainment cabinet, book cabinet. If you think its looks decent , go closer. Sometimes you might find a table or cabinet that you dont really want - but it looks great! or you think you can repair it to a good condition. Well, take it to your garage- make the repairs a weekend project- make it look good and give it to a thrift store!! You can even estimate the price and take it off your taxes as donations. You worked on it, saved it from the landfill - and now someone will use it.
Does this work? well I lived in 5 different apartments in 4 different states. And I have just bought four pieces of furniture in my life. Only one of my TVs was bought new, one computer and my projector.
The rest of my stuff is all from diving or at most garage sales.
Saves me the money for the things I really want in life- camping, travel and my own 6 acres of land.
