When I start a run its full of bravado and speed and form.
After the first 5 K - it all becomes about surviving the run and completing your goal. While "survival running" - where you slouch and your arms hang loose and your feet fall flat and there is no bounce or smile- is not sexy, its the most efficient form of running in terms of calories used for the distance covered.
IT'S WHEN YOU ARE RUNNING OUT OF ENERGY THAT YOUR BODY STARTS RUNNING EFFICIENTLY TO CONSERVE IT. Because now, its just a matter of survival.
Sometimes I think thats true of oil too.
Until we find more sources of cheap oil- we are all going to show off our big fast powerful cars.
When we start running out of oil and energy - thats when we will learn our lesson and run our lives most efficiently. In fact , those of us (like me) who are doing their part to conserve - may actually be making the process or destruction-reconstruction slower and more painful.
MAYBE buying Hummers is a good thing- making the world run out of oil faster and making the transformation quicker.
BUT, BUT, BUT -- every runner will tell you of times when they ran too fast and then had this slump they could not overcome and had to quit the race. I myself get this slump in some form or another around mile 5.
If I overcome that (its a mental game) and find my true pace- I can run 22 miles without even feeling the pain.
Same way, when the energy crises truly hits- some will have to opt out . this could be hospitals running out of electricity (ventilators), insulin and other meds not reaching people, people not able to get food delivered or go to work. starvation, disease, mass deaths. Imagine people not getiing their aspirin, antidepressants! children not being able to reach schools. Computers not working.
the humans who survive this will be a new peoples - having learnt a valuable lesson.
this is what i am training for- the slump.
I can easily run 6.5 miles in an hour everyday. So I will still be able to reach my hospital on time. I survive on 1280 cals a day (plus 300 if I run)- I will be able to live on less and outlast many others. I already live in a small house and my family camps for days. we are comfortable with navigation, fishing, trapping, living in tents. I plan to learn sailing soon.
I am buying 7 acres- a place where I can grow my own vegetables, goats, rabbits and fish. I have designed an energy independent house with solar, rain water harvesting, wind, biogas and geothermal power. When prius C comes out- i will go for it- powering it with my own solar generated electricity. Amateur Radio and handheld 2 -ways can be used for communication.
Me and my family should survive. (in the end its also a matter of chance)
Will you?
